I think it's more about the cat thinking that the circle must be important to the human. It MUST sit in it to prevent the human from using it.

Coincidence? I THINK NOT !!
My guess is that cats see the marks on the floor as a box or enclosure and as something which provides security and safety. Cats like that and need it sometimes and usually find places like that.
ネコとしては、ガムテープの中に入れるものなら入りたそうだったｗ
でも、やっぱり無理だと観念して、テープを貼って作った輪を選んだって感じ。
