When I lived in Japan, not far from my apartment was a piece of farmland about the size of a tennis court. The farmer used to grow wheat on it. I couldn't see how it made any money. There is no way he produced enough wheat from that little field to pay for the seed, fertiliser, labour, and fuel it took to grow and harvest it. There must be tens of thousands of those little pieces of farmland scattered around urban Japan.
