It is a season of oseibo (お歳暮), a year-end gift season. It seems that the farmer-san was given a box of ham, which is commonly used for oseibo. Salted whole salmon, tea, and sweats, etc., are often used as oseibo gift as well.
This box is so huge, I think 10 cats can comfortably sleep inside
